MEC Motlhabane Applauds Law Enforcement Official as the Festive Season Arrive Alive Operations Ends and Monitors Provision of Learner Transportation

We are now at the last phase of the Festive Season Arrive Alive operations wherein holiday makers, workers and scholars are returning to various places of work and home. We are expecting traffic volumes to increase once again. This week and in particular, on Wednesday, 09th January 2019, we are focused on the back to school campaign.

It is at this time of the year when traffic violations including excessive speeding, overloading, overtaking recklessly and negligent driving occur. There's blatant disregard for road signs, drinking and driving, fatigue, driving un-roadworthy vehicles, accidents involving pedestrians and stray animals are rive.

Buses, taxis and private cars ferrying learners to various schools will be the focus for Law Enforcement Agents and Traffic Officials. Traffic officers are stationed along all major and minor roads. N12, N4, N18, N14 and all roads entering or exiting major North West towns and busy roads will be closely monitored. A 24/7 visible traffic control measure has been stepped-up.

Dr. Mokgantshang Motlhabane, North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management calls on South Africans to "take responsibility for themselves and others while driving. Share the road wisely. Passengers should wear their seatbelts and children must be placed in child restraints or child seats".

"I also wish to especially applaud all those road users who obeyed the rules of the road. Especially those who conducted themselves well, whether you are a driver, passenger, commuter, jay-walker, pedestrians and owners of stray animals. Whilst it is the purview of RTMC to consolidate road accident and incidences, we are hopeful that as a province our road fatalities statistics will remain low comparatively although at some point we stood at 57 accidents". said MEC Motlhabane.

"When the accident that took 13 people's life tragically, a majority of them being women on that fateful Sunday morning we, as North West Province experienced a first, yet so painful an accident. This was followed by another accident wherein four Botswana Nationals perished after their taxi lost control and overturned in Madikwe. These statistics, regrettably tell a terrible story about road safety, in our province, particularly during this season of festivities". Conclude Motlhabane.

The MEC expressed his gratitude for the collaboration of numerous stakeholder like SAPS, Home Affairs, SARS, Correctional Services, Municipalities, Environmental Affairs, Economic Development in the operations. Emergency Services, RTMC, SANRAL, Road Accident Fund (RAF), RTIA, AARTO, Cross Border, Trans Kalahari Corridor, etc agencies also took part in the operations.

Meanwhile Dr Motlhabane and the departmental officials will be embarking on the monitoring of the provision of scholar transportation early in the morning on Wednesday, 09th January 2019. This Back to School program takes place on the 2019 school re-opening to ensure that this scholar transport intervention is provided for as mandated.

This intervention is expected to be in sync with the department's objective to provide; reliable, safe and regular transportation to learners in order to ease learner's access to education.

Regrettably, those who will be found overloading learners, not picking-up learners, using un-roadworthy buses and not providing clean, reliable learner transportation will be penalised.
